四、阅读理解(共15小题;每题3分,共45分。)
  阅读下列短文,然后根据短文的内容从每小题的四个选择项中选出最佳的一项,并把它前面的大写字母填入左边的括号里。
Passage One
The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun , but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.
RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during "critical" stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.
The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. 8ut, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受损的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.

36. The passage is mainly about __________.
A. a new regulation for all airlines
B. the defects of electronic devices
C. a possible cause of aircraft crashes
D. effective safety measures for air flight
答案:C
37. Few airlines want to impose a total passengers using electronic devices because_________.
A. they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference
B. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
C. most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players
D. they have other effective safety measures to fall back on
答案:B
38. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic field on an airplane's computers?
A. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane
B. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
C. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs
D. Because expert lack equipment to do such research.
答案:C
39. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.
A. is in favor of prohibiting passengers-use of electronic devices completely
B. has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference
C. hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem
D. regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight
答案:A

Passage Two
Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness "for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am 1 making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people adversely. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliments because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true." It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness With determined and patient effort in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as  their strengths. For example, most people would like to be “A” students in every subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have difficulty in some areas. People’s expectations of themselves must be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy.
Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.
40. According to the writer, self-awareness is __________.
A. harmful to people         B. a weak point of shy people
C. the cause of unhappiness  D. a good quality
答案:D
41. What is the shy people's reaction to compliment?
A. They are pleased by it.
B. They feel it is not true.
C. They are very sensitive to it.

答案:B
42. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Shyness helps us to live up to our full potential.
B. Shyness enables us to understand ourselves better.
C. Shyness blocks our chances for a rich life.
D. Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem.
答案:C
43. We can infer from the passage that the writer is __________.
A. a shy person
B. a realistic person
C. a sensitive person
D. a reserved person

Passage Three
Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a very complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the "system" of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.
If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price", many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. The definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known.
80th the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged , the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.
44. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Inherent weaknesses of the Price System.
B. The Complexities of the Price System.
C. Credit Terms in Transactions.
D. Resource allocation and the Public sector.
答案:B
45. According to the passage, the price system is related primarily to ________.
A. labor and education
B. transportation and insurance
C. utilities and repairs
D. products and services
答案:D
46. In the last sentence of the passage, the word “they" refers to ________.
A. return privileges
B. all the factors .
C. buyer and seller
D. money.
答案:C
47. The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses _________.
A. unusual ways to advertise products.
B. types of payment plans for service.
C. theories about how products affect different levels of society.
D. how certain elements of a price "package" influence its market value
答案:D

Passage Four
Say you are a 17th century construction worker who’s worked long and hard to build a splendid tower for the dead wife of your emperor.
Now say that the emperor orders to cut your fingertips off so you can never build another one. Yes,that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale behind the construction is just as impressive(印象深刻的)as the building itself.
First, there’s the emperor of northern India, Shah Jehan, also called the King of the World. In 1612, Shah Jehan married Mumtaz Mahal. Madly in love, they had 14 children over the next 20 years. But then sadness came. As Mumtaz was about to give birth to child number 14, she said she had heard her unborn baby cry out. It was a sign of death. And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial(纪念物) to celebrate their love.
When the heartbroken Jehan appeared eight days after his wife’s death, his people were shocked to see that his coal-black hair had turned snow-white.
Putting away his sadness, Jehan did his best to carry out his wife’s dying wish. More than 20,000 workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 1653, Jehan placed Mumtaz’s remains in the center under the building.
And then, son number five, Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father. Jehan lived the rest of his days-eight years, to be imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal. Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the timeless treasure from a distance. But never again would he be allowed to visit it-until he was buried next to his wife.
Today 25,000 people visit the Taj Mahal each day. Though the reason for building the tower was a strange sad story, those who see its breath-taking beauty are reminded of the happiness that inspired(激发……的灵感) its construction.
